The Internship // How to knock it out of the park
Testing out your career path with an internship, is a chance to gain confidence, explore new sectors of the industry and gain crucial experience. When is the right time to intern? Now! There’s an influx of jobs on the architecture & design market which means more companies are looking for support. Here’s our guide to getting the best benefit from your internship…
Get in a little bit early and leave a little bit late…
Even if it’s just 15 minutes, this will give your colleagues a sense that you’re a keen and organised person.
B.Y.O. notebook…
The number one rule as a junior is to always take detailed notes, bringing your own notebook on the first day will show initiative and give you an edge. As you think of questions throughout the day, jot them down so you can ask at an appropriate time, as the workplace can be a hectic environment.
It’s always time for tea…
Everybody loves to be offered a cup of tea, especially when they are too busy to make it themselves. If you can see some stressed out people in the office, take the initiative and offer to make them a tea or coffee. This is a great icebreaker and shows that you’re not above any task that comes your way.
Lunchtime gossip…
Time your lunch break with others in the office and take the chance to ask questions, which will help you to make connections. For example “You have my dream job, how did you get there?” this will start a conversation where you can continue to ask questions.
Go the extra mile...
As creatives we always want to do better, if you can harness this characteristic out of work hours and do further research on a project it will show a passion for the work, which is valuable to employers. This will also give you a chance to talk about your own ideas.
