When looking for a place to accomodate family and friends hotelier João Rodrigues stumbled across an 18th century building set in a romantic square in the old cultural quarter of Lisbon, Spain.

Rodrigues commissioned local architect Manuel Aires Mateus to transform the historical building into a boutique hotel of just 6 suites. In keeping with the idea of family, meals are shared at a long communal dinning table, just as they are in Italian homes.

The interior contrasts large scale Baroque paintings in opulent frames with thoughtfully considered and placed contemporary furniture and fittings. Generous windows let in an abundance of light and frame views of the city which are also reflected in the river below.

The overall feel is luxurious with the rich patina of history juxtaposed with a modern pared back sensibility.

“The building’s sense of intimacy is accomplished through a sensitive interplay of interior and exterior features.”
