The Career Changer // Meet evening student Daniel Bemrose
In the process of building this blog we have been talking to our students about why they’re here and whether it was the right move. It was an absolute delight for us to hear that for student Daniel Bemrose, his decision to study after work, two nights per week, is paying off…
Tell us about why you felt compelled to change careers… why interiors?
“Making the decision to change career paths was not easy as I have been working in real estate for nearly a decade, but not being creative in my day job was the major factor in this decision. I also wanted to explore something that could lead me to being self-employed and where I could utilise the experience (the good and the bad) that I have gained from managing property for all that time.”
How do you find working during the day and studying in the evening?
“Working and studying can be challenging at times, especially if you’ve had a long day but because I am interested in what I am doing it has become more of an outlet and allows me to switch off for a few hours. I really like that the classes are small so topics can be discussed as a group to make sure everyone understands before moving on. There is also an even balance of theory and practical and it is great having access to the online eCampus, so if you need to revise anything from a previous class at any point it’s all available online, including powerpoint presentations and video tutorials.”
How would you describe your experience at Sydney Design School so far?
“It has been really enjoyable. The staff are really aspirational in their teaching methods and they’ve definitely opened my eyes to the world of design, not only interiors but all the other areas of design which end up becoming your influences. There is a great social aspect to the school, you always receive invitations to special outings that the school organises, and local design events. Having an in-house Career Coach is probably one of the major benefits as they continually update you with internship and career opportunities through their industry connections.”
You have a beautiful Instagram feed @danielbemrosedesigns – where do you find your inspiration?
“I try not to think about it too much as I prefer my inspiration to come organically. I always like to keep an eye on the world around, wherever I am, even as I am sitting enjoying my morning coffee. It’s quite amazing the things you see when you’re not on your phone.”
